United Country Party

The United Country Party were a minor political party operating in the United Kingdom in the 1970s. They were anti-immigration and were chaired by the well known astronomer Patrick Moore for a period. They claimed to represent "people with common sense" and were born out of the weakness of the final days of the government of James Callaghan. In general the party was born out of right wing frustration at the moderate policies pursued by Edward Heath during his leadership of the Conservative Party. As such the election of Margaret Thatcher as Prime Minister sounded a death knell for the United Country Party at their inception. In the 1979 general election they stood two candidates who received 1,033 votes between them. Both lost their deposit. In 1980 they were absorbed into the right-wing New Britain Party.
