Union City, Tennessee

Union City is a city located in Obion County, Tennessee. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,876. It is the county seat of Obion County.

Geography

Union City is located at 36°25'28" North, 89°3'3" West (36.424395, -89.050850). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 27.6 km² (10.7 mi²). 27.6 km² (10.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,876 people, 4,568 households, and 2,905 families residing in the city. The population density is 393.9/km² (1,020.1/mi²). There are 5,013 housing units at an average density of 181.6/km² (470.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.44% White, 21.29% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 1.59% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 3.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,568 households out of which 29.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 15.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 32.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.89. In the city the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.4 males. The median income for a household in the city is $29,399, and the median income for a family is $40,737. Males have a median income of $35,801 versus $19,694 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,787. 16.8% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
