Tyler county is named for John Tyler, the tenth president of the United States. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,423 km² (936 mi²). 2,390 km² (923 mi²) of it is land and 33 km² (13 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.37% water. There are 10,419 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 83.79% White, 11.96% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.49% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 3.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 7,775 households out of which 29.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.10% are married couples living together, 10.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.00% are non-families. 24.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 2.94. In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 106.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 108.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,808, and the median income for a family is $35,195. Males have a median income of $31,797 versus $19,594 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,367. 15.80% of the population and 12.60% of families are below the poverty line.
