Tuxpan
Tuxpan
or
Tuxpam
(pronounced "TOOKSpahn" or in archaic native form, "TOOSHpahn") is a name shared by different
cities
in
Mexico
. In the
native
Nahuatl
language, it literally means "Place of the
Rabbits
". The best known of these cities is the
municipality
of Tuxpan in
Veracruz
. Veracruz state is located in the
eastern
part of Mexico, on the
Gulf of Mexico
. Tuxpan is a
port
city, and is the closest port to
Mexico City
. In the past, Tuxpan had
oil
fields
developed around it. Tuxpan is now primarily a
grain
port, with emphasis on
soybeans
and
maize
. Tuxpan is also an important port for
maritime
imports
into Mexico. Sometimes referred to as the "Puerto de Tuxpan", Tuxpan is able to handle
supertanker
sized
cargo
ships
. Due to increasing
commercial
shipping
traffic
in the city of
Veracruz
, Tuxpan is now the
headquarters
for the
Mexican Navy
's Gulf fleet. It is the home port for several
military
vessels
including 3
missile
cruisers
purchased from the
US Navy
after their decomissioning following their last service in the first
Persian Gulf War
.
