Tuscarora is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,400. The town is named after the Tuscarora tribe. The Town of Tuscarora is in the south part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1859.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Pennsylvania. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 97.8 km² (37.8 mi²). 97.8 km² (37.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.08% water.

Demographics

As of the census ² of 2000, there are 1,400 people, 500 households, and 382 families residing in the town. The population density is 14.3/km² (37.1/mi²). There are 565 housing units at an average density of 5.8/km² (15.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.64% White, 0.14% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 500 households out of which 39.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.4% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% are non-families. 16.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.09. In the town the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 30.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 104.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $31,708, and the median income for a family is $32,054. Males have a median income of $26,094 versus $26,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,906. 18.1% of the population and 14.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 23.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
