Tungurahua, (quechua tunguri=gullet, rahua=burn, spit fire), is an active volcano in Ecuador. It is situated in the eastern slopes of the Andes, towering above the Amazon forest. Its most recent eruption occurred in 1944. In August 2003, it ejected a plume of ash and smoke 3 kilometres (2 miles) into the air.
Tungurahua is also a province of Ecuador, with captital city Ambato. The Tungurahua volcano is located in the province of Tungurahua.
