Tryptophan Synthase

Tryptophan synthase(EC 4.2.1.20) is the final enzyme in the production of tryptophan from indole-glycerol phosphate and serine. The enzyme is comprised of two proteins. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid in humans. Some vitamin suppliers refer to L-tryptophan as a "natural alternative to Prozac" since it is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin; a deficiency of which is implicated in some depressive disorders. Tryptophan is also found in turkey, and is often cited as causing a feeling of lethargy and contentment following large meals. Tryptophan has the useful property of absorbing ultraviolet light, helping to make proteins visible to detectors in chromatographs. The scientific name for tryptophan synthetase, methionylglutaminy...serine, which is made up of 267 amino acids, has appeared written down a number of times and has 1,913 letters. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, 18th edition, it is the longest chemical word for C1289H2051N343O375S8.
