Triple 6 Mafia

Originally called "Backyard Posse", Triple 6 Mafia were a group of US rap musicians from Memphis, TN. The group had many members (including Gangsta Blac, Gangsta Boo, Lord Infamous, Koopsta Knicca & chief producers Juicy J and DJ Paul) and are best known for their gruesome lyrics, extolling drugs, pornography, and violence. They released several underground mixtapes in the Memphis area which were extremely gritty but very adventurous in that they sampled everything from classic soul music to well-known rap tracks. Some of the tracks on these tapes were re-recorded for later albums such as "Long and Hard" and "Tear Da Club Up". During this (underground) time period they also used references to the occult in their lyrics. In a 2003 issue of The Source it was said that this was an articulation of the "hell on earth" of poverty and crime in American ghettos. They released their first official album, Mystic Stylez, in 1995. After this point, they became widely known as Three 6 Mafia and used the Triple 6 Mafia name to mark reissues of underground releases. Also a long time ago Triple Six Mafia was known as the "West Memphis Posse".
