Trekbbs

TrekBBS is the most popular Star Trek message board on the internet. Located at www.trekbbs.com, it is affiliated with the UGO Network and TrekToday. It was created in 1999 by Christian Hhne Sparborth and Saleel Majeed to allow a general discussion of Star Trek-related topics. Since then it has grown to include one of the most frequented general science-fiction discussions on the internet, and currently the non-Star Trek discussions are the most popular on the forum. The board currently welcomes 5100+ registered users.

  • The Original Series Discussion of and . Currently divided between those who are fans of the modern-Treks and believe these to be canon, those who do not accept them at all, and those in the middle. The validity of Star Trek: Enterprise is also hotly debated.

  • Star Trek Movies Discussion of the ten Star Trek movies.
  • Star Trek Gaming Discussion of PC and console games based on the Star Trek universe.
  • Future of Trek Discussion about the current state of Trek and fans' ideas about what should happen in the future. Frequently debated are show ideas that represent radical departures from the normal Star Trek series, (e.g. a Star Fleet Academy series, a Section 31 series, a post-federation series set in the far future, etc).

  • Miscellaneous Discussion of general non-Trek topics which don't belong in other forums.
  • The Neutral Zone Fierce debate about political and religious topics. The board is predominately left-wing, possibly due to the liberalism shown in Star Trek, though there is a vocal right-wing minority. Themes include gay marriage, the Bush presidency, the Republican government, etc. To keep out trolls, fifty posts are needed before a user can post into this forum.
  • Questions, Suggestions & Feedback A forum for members to suggest changes to the board.

  • Moderator Actions Forum for regular users to question and ask for clarification on moderator actions.
  • TrekToday News Items Automatically updating news forum, about Trek happenings.
  • Ten Forward A forum in a forum, it contains various lounges that can be accessed based on one's rank (which depends on the number of posts made) at the BBS. The purpose of these lounges is to provide a place for simple games and friendly chitchat, things that would be considered spamming in the other subforums.
  • The Briefing Room A forum for the moderators and administrators to discuss board happenings and some delicate subjects. For this reason, it's normally hidden from view to normal visitors. There is a small "tin-foil hat" group who swear it has other uses.

Spin off boards

TrekBBS has spawned a number of spin off communities, some founded by the owner/administrators of TrekBBS, others by current or ex-members. These boards include:
  • CSI Files (http://www.csifiles.com/ ) an "official" spin off board for the CSI television franchise
  • SlipstreamWeb (http://www.slipstreamweb.com/ ) an "official" spin off board for the television show Andromeda, now no longer updated
  • Troll Kingdom (http://www.trollkingdom.com/forum/ ) a board free of rules, begun by banned members of TrekBBS
  • Wordforge (http://www.wordforge.net/ ) a creative arts and politics board
  • TerranBBS (http://www.terranbbs.net/ ) a general board with a sci-fi bent
  • ExIsle
Many of these spin off boards were formed or populated by disgruntled subsets of the TrekBBS member base, a reflection of the complexities associated with virtual community moderation.
