Traunreut is a small city in the south-eastern part of Bavaria, Germany in the Traunstein district. It is situated in the heart of the region called Chiemgau between Munich and Salzburg -- approximately 10 km east of the lake Chiemsee, 25 km north of the Alps, and 35 km west of Salzburg. Traunreut has a population of approximately 22,000 and is a center of industry.

Brief history

  • 1938: the ordnance factory "MUNA St. Georgen" was founded in the outskirts of the village St. Georgen
  • after 1945: expellees were placed in the abandoned grounds
  • 1950: the village Traunreut was founded
  • 1960: Traunreut becomes city
  • 1978: the city incorporated the neighbour villages Traunwalchen, Stein-St. Georgen and Pierling
  • 2004: Traunreut is largest city of the district
