transgressive art

Transgressive art is a genre of art, filmmaking and literature that goes beyond the bounds of social acceptability. It often deals with subject matter of a violent, sexual or drug-related nature. Recent examples of transgressive literature Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. These works dealt with issues that were considered to be outside the social norms. Their characters abused drugs, engaged in violent behaviour or could have been considered sexual deviants. Due to their lifestyles the characters in such works are often lead lifestyles which could be considered self-destructive, their ultimate goal being nihilistic in nature: to "hit bottom" and bounce back in a new and improved form.
