Tran Van Tra

Tran Van Tra (1918 - April 20, 1996) was a general in the army of North Vietnam during the three Indochina Wars. He led the attack on Saigon during the Tet Offensive in the Vietnam War. In 1982, Tra published his memoirs. The memoirs detailed how in 1975 he had through behind-the-scenes politics, convinced the North Vietnamese Politburo to change their cautious strategy to a more aggressive one. This account offended and embarrassed officials in the newly unified Vietnam and ultimately led to his purge from the Communist Party of Vietnam.
