Training Corset

A training corset is a type of corset used for modifying the wearer's posture or body shape. Training corsets are used prior to a regular corset, as if a long corset is used as one's first corset, the ribs are depressed futher, which has negative effects upon the body. The training corset raises the ribs by use of a shoulder brace, which elongates the waist and expands the lung area. Use of a training corset may result in shoulder problems, because the shoulders have no direct connection to the spine and naturally follow the ribs' alignment, although a good shoulder brace may reduce this problem.

Corsets for posture training

Corsets may be worn for orthopedic reasons, such as correcting a crooked spine or straigtening the back and shoulders.

Corsets for tightlacing

Corsets worn for tightlacing are sometimes called training corsets, probably because of tightlacing's alternative names of "waist training" and "corset training". As tightlacers usually want to achieve and maintain a significant alteration in their body shape, the corsets used are stronger and more rigid, which requires a corset made of stronger fabric (leather is sometimes used) and with less flexible boning. Any style of corset can be used for tightlacing, although some styles are more popular and suitable than others. However, as the corsets necessary to maintain a body modification are no less rigid than those first worn to achieve the modification, there is no effective structural difference between corsets worn during training and those worn once the desired body shape is achieved. The term "training corset" can, therefore, be used for any corset worn by somebody undertaking corset training. A training corset is also an alternative name for a discipline corset. A discipline corset is used as a tool for punishment when a tightlacer deviates from his or her training routine - for example, by loosening the corset without the trainer's permission. Thus, discipline corsets are constructed to place severe limitations on the wearer's movements: they extend to just above the knees, and are constructed to be laced very tightly. These corsets are not designed to be worn for long periods, but only for a few hours. The term training corset may also be used to mean an everyday corset used for waist training, which will probably be hidden under clothes and therefore will consider practical aspects (comfort, ease of laundering) rather than aesthetic ones. This distinguishes it from a corset worn as an external garment for special occasions, which is designed more for show.
