Tracey ElleryTracey Ellery, Australian former executive and co-founder of Looksmart, was prominent in the student movement through the 1980s, and was President of the Australian National Union of Students. She was briefly the General Manager of Student Services Australia, a company wholly owned by the Australian National Union of Students. Her husband Evan Thornley had been the Chief Executive of the company previously. The company later collapsed due to failed investments in computer retail and other ventures championed by her and her husband, such as the Smart Shop. During her time at the massive loss-generating internet company Looksmart, Tracey Ellery was responsible for product development. The poor quality of Looksmart's search experience relative to Yahoo! and Google is widely blamed for Looksmart's collapse from a Top 15 web property to 2100th site according to Alexa rankings. Tracey Ellery achieved prominence in the Australian media in 2000 after revelations of harassment allegations against her brother Geoff Ellery, an employee of the company at the time. Geoff Ellery worked as a Senior Editor within Looksmart, at one stage heading its Denmark operation. Geoff Ellery left the company not long after the allegations were published in the Australian media. Tracey Ellery resigned from executive duties at Looksmart in 2001 but continues as a director in Looksmart, using her casting vote in 2002 against independent non-executive directors who opposed the appointment of her husband as company Chairman. Tracey Ellery now jointly owns loss-making left-wing publisher Pluto Press Australia with her husband Evan Thornley. Ellery is a member of the Australian Labor Party.
