Towarzysz
(The companion), plural:
Towarzysze
was the name of cavalry soldiers in the
Polish
army since the
16th century
. The
Towarzysz
was a
noble
who served in the army. His pay was relative to the number of soldiers in his fellowship (
Poczet
). He armed, provided and commanded his soldiers (
Pocztowy
) during a battle or war. In the ligh-cavalery he mostly fought alone without a fellowship. The rank of a
Towarzysz husarski
was equivalent to a standard-bearer in foreign armies.
