Toms Macgiolla

Toms MacGiolla (born 1924), former Irish politician. Toms MacGiolla was born on 25 January, 1924 in County Tipperary. In his early life MacGiolla was an active republican. He was interned in the 1950's and was one of the people who tried to push Sinn Fin to the left following the failure of the IRA border campaign from 1956 to 1962. In 1969 Sinn Fin split and MacGiolla became leader of Official Sinn Fin. In 1977 the party changed its name to Sinn Fin The Workers' Party and in 1982 it became simply The Workers Party. In 1982 MacGiolla was elected to Dil ireann under the banner of the new party. In 1988 he retired as party leader, succeeded by Proinsias De Rossa. In 1992 MacGiolla became the sole member of The Workers Party in the Dil when the Democratic Left was founded. He lost his Dil seat in the general election later that year. MacGiolla served as Lord Mayor of Dublin from 1993 to 1994 and remained a Member of Dublin Corporation until 1999. Macgiolla, Toms Macgiolla, Toms
