Tom Bingham, Baron Bingham Of Cornhill

Thomas Henry Bingham, Baron Bingham of Cornhill, PC (born October 13,1933), is one of the most senior judges in the United Kingdom. The Lord Chief Justice from from 1996 to 2000, he was personally responsible for adding "of Wales" to the title Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales. He then joined the Law Lords as the "Senior" Law Lord though he had not been one before, and was succeeded as Lord Chief Justice by Lord Woolf, who had in 1996 succeeded him as Master of the Rolls. He is an advocate of reorganization of the British court system, and under present Government proposals his title would become President of the Supreme Court. However, the current plans would make him subordinate to the Lord Chief Justice, so it is possible he miscalculated in making his unprecedented job change.
