in the north-east of the state of
Yucatn

Mexico
. The city is located at 21.13 North, 88.15 West, about 160 km east of
Mrida, Yucatn
, 200 km west of
Cancn
and 42 km south of
Ro Lagartos
, the city's traditional
sea port
on the
Gulf of Mexico
. As of
2004
, the population of Tizimn is about 40,000 people. The word "Tizimin" meand "
tapir
" in the
Maya language
. With the
Spanish conquest of Yucatn
, Tizimn was established as a
Spanish
colonial town in
1544
. Tizimn is known for its festival in honor of the
Three Wise Men
in late
December
and early
January
.
