U.S. Congressman
from
Indiana
who served from
1991
to
2003
. Roemer earned a
B.A.
from the
University of California San Diego
in
1979
. He also earned an
M.A.
and a
Ph.D.
from the
University of Notre Dame
in
1982
and
1986
, respectively. He was a member of the
commission
that investigated the
September 11 terrorist attacks
and was the key author of the legislation that authorized the Commission. He is a son-in-law of Former
US Senator
J. Bennett Johnston
of
Louisiana
. On
January 9
,
2005
, Roemer announced his intention to seek the chairmanship of the
Democratic National Committee
, but withdrew from the race on
February 5
, leaving
Howard Dean
as the only candidate left in the race.
