Tilopa

Tilopa (988 - 1069) was an Indian tantric practitioner, regarded as the human founder of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. Born into a brahmin (priestly) caste, Tilopa abandoned a monastic life upon receiving orders from a dakini (spirit) who told him to assume a wandering existence and pretend to be insane. Tilopa would become the chief instructor of Naropa, who in turn would instruct Marpa, the translator who introduced Buddhism into Tibet.
