Tibook

TiBook is a nickname for Apple Computer's titanium line (first revision) of the PowerBook G4: laptop computers using the G4 processor. The name is derived from the chemical symbol of the element titanium, Ti, which the computer's case is made from, and the brand name iBook, Apple's other product line of laptop computers.

Industrial Design

The new design was a sharp departure from the black plastic, curvilinear PowerBook G3 models that preceded it, more modernistthan ergonomic. Apple's industrial design, headed by British designer Jonathan Ive, was to continue toward simple, elegant, and minimalistic designs - the TiBook laid the groundwork for the PowerMac G5and the Mac mini.

Revisions

There were three updates of the TiBook specification, featuring CPU speed increases and other upgrades such as Ethernet and DVI. The four releases are referred to by Apple as follows:
  • Titanium, January 2001
  • Gigabit Ethernet, October 2001
  • DVI, April 2002
  • 1GHz/867MHz, November 2002
In 2003, the next generation of Powerbook was introduced, with an aluminium enclosure.
