Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania

Thornbury Township is a township located in Chester County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,678.

History

Thornbury was founded by six families in 1687. The Battle of Brandywine, part of the Revolutionary War took place partially in the town.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.1 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,678 people, 1,023 households, and 734 families residing in the township. The population density is 264.4/km² (684.8/mi²). There are 1,095 housing units at an average density of 108.1/km² (280.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 91.90% White, 2.58% African American, 0.00% Native American, 4.56% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,023 households out of which 33.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.6% are married couples living together, 4.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% are non-families. 22.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.10. In the township the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 34.8% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males. The median income for a household in the township is $84,225, and the median income for a family is $112,291. Males have a median income of $70,602 versus $42,371 for females. The per capita income for the township is $47,505. 1.6% of the population and 0.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 2.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
