Thor's Hammer (Stargate)

Thor's Hammer is a fictional alien device and symbol in the science fiction television series Stargate SG-1. Thor's Hammer is said by legend to be a great weapon, wielded by the god Thor. The Hammer is also the symbol for the planet Cimmeria, a world forbidden to the Goa'uld. Thor's Hammer is the device which protects the people of Cimmeria from Goa'uld interference.

The Device

The device has several parts: Every person that comes through the stargate on Cimmeria is scanned by an obelisk with the Hammer symbol upon it. Those who are found to have a Goa'uld symbiote or larvae are transported to a networks of caves, and there confronted by a hologram of Thor. This hologram informs the prisoners that the only way out is to face the Hammer and have the Goa'uld parasite destroyed, only the host body can survive. The network of caves have the ability to negate Goa'uld weapons, once inside these devices will not function, but if the device passes through the Hammer it will work outside.

Discovery by SG-1

In hope of making contact with Thor or his race, the Asgard, SG-1 came to Cimmeria. Teal'c, a Jaffa was scanned and transported to the caves, along with Colonel Jack O'Neill who had tried to stop the transport beam. The pair eventually come to the actual Hammer, which Teal'c cannot pass through if he wishes to live. Daniel Jackson destroys Thor's Hammer in order to save Teal'c. SG-1 believes that the Goa'uld will never know Cimmeria is now open to attack.

Invasion by Heru'ur

It is later discovered that the Goa'uld System Lord Heru-ur has invaded Cimmeria. The people of Cimmeria send a message to SG-1, in the hope of getting some help. SG-1 travels back to Cimmeria and face the Goa'uld's forces. They discover a means of contacting Thor to inform him of the problem. Thor comes in his Asgard mothership and destroys those Goa'uld forces that did not flee upon his arrival. He informs SG-1 that he will repair the Hammer, but this time it will make an exception for the Jaffa known as Teal'c.
