Thomas Cleary

Dr. Thomas Cleary is a prolific author and translator of Oriental religious literature. He received a PhD in East Asian Languages from Harvard University. Early in his career, he was sponsored by the abbot Zentatsu Richard Baker of the San Francisco Zen Center, and given a stipend on which to live while conducting his translation work. His first publication, with his brother J.C. Cleary, also an accomplished scholar, was the translation of the massive Zen koan collection, The Blue Cliff Record (Japanese: Hekigan Roku) ISBN 159030232X . Though Dr. Cleary's work is pioneering and central to many western Buddhist studies programs, his work has been occasionally criticised for idiosyncratic and loose translation, often ignoring established word-usage conventions. His books also are notable for long and rambling introductions. See also: list of works by Thomas Cleary.
