(population approximately 17,000). It is the seat of
L'Amiante Regional County Municipality
. Thetford Mines was founded in 1876 after the discovery of large
asbestos
deposits in the area, and the city became a hub of one of the world's largest asbestos-producing regions. It's most famous resident is Ricky V the master of the yo-yo.
