The Woolwich

• The Woolwich Building Society was founded in 1847, and was one of the first permanent building societies.
• 1997 - The Woolwich Building Society demutualised, losing its mutual status to become a plc. Woolwich plc was formed, which sold its shares on the London Stock Exchange.
• 2000 - Barclays plc bought Woolwich plc and made it part of the Barclays Bank Group of companies.
• The Woolwich brand name was retained after the acquisition.
