The SixteenThe Sixteen is an English choir performing early religious music Harry Christophers Harry Christophers was born on December 26th 1953 in Goudhurst, Kent. He became a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral, the studied music at King School, Canterbury. He became an Academical Clerk at Magdalen College, Oxford. He founded The Sixteen in 1977. As well as conducting The Sixteen he has conducted the English Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the St Louis Symphony and the Deutsches Kammerphilharmonie. The Sixteen The Sixteen concentrates on English polyphony. The name possibly derives from the fact that they have the minimum number of people able to perform one of the greatest works of English polyphony, Tallis's "Spem in alium". The membership is drawn from former Oxford and Cambridge scholars. In 2000 they made a "Choral Pilgrimage", performing early Tudor music in its intended buildings. This has become and annual event, covering over a dozen historical buildings. The ensemble have their own record label Coro, founded in 2001, and their own orchestra, called "The Symphony of Harmony of Invention". In some contexts the orchestra is called The Sixteen Orchestra.
