The Silver Jews

The Silver Jews are a band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1989 by writer David Berman along with Pavement's Stephen Malkmus and Bob Nastanovich. The trio began writing songs for amusement and recording them on friends' answering machines. As Pavement was elevated to the heights of indie-stardom in the 1990s, Berman recorded several albums with various lineups over the course of the decade under the name The Silver Jews. Some of these recordings included contributions from Malkmus and Nastanovich appearing under pseudonyms. Although certainly esoteric, the Silver Jews' recordings have met with critical success. Berman is best known for his quirky, offbeat poetry and his country crooner styling.
