The Rose Tattoo

The Rose Tattoo is a Tennessee Williams play. It opened on Broadway in February 1951, and a film adaptation was released in 1955. It tells the story of an Italian-American widow in Louisiana who has allowed herself to withdraw from the world after her husband's death, and expects her daughter to do the same. The film adaptation stars Anna Magnani, Burt Lancaster, Marisa Pavan and Jo Van Fleet. The movie was adapted by Williams and Hal Kanter and directed by Daniel Mann. It won Academy Awards for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Anna Magnani), Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White and Best Cinematography, Black-and-White. It was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Marisa Pavan), Best Costume Design, Black-and-White (Edith Head), Best Film Editing, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture and Best Picture.
