The Quarry

The Quarry is the name of the main park in the Shropshire county town of Shrewsbury, England. It is called "the Quarry" park as there used to be a stone quarry there, used in the Middle Ages. It was a small quarry and now has been transformed into a flower garden with ponds and fountains, called "The Dingle" (dingle is a Shropshire word used for an area of beauty or gardens). Also in the Quarry park is a bandstand and nearby are the Shrewsbury town swimming baths. The River Severn runs through the parkland, which holds various festivals through the year including the Shrewsbury Flower Show and the Shrewsbury Regatta. The headquarters of the Shropshire Horticultural Society are also located in the park. Opposite the Quarry on the other side of the River Severn is Shrewsbury School.
