The Polish Boy

The Polish Boy is a science fiction short story by Orson Scott Card. It is a prequel to Card's Ender's Game series, and tells of the childhood of Ender's father - John Paul Wiggin (Polish: Jan Pawel Wieczorek). In this story, John Paul is five, and is interviewed by two International Fleet officers, who believe he is exceptionally intelligent. It tells of the struggle of his family, with many other Catholic Poles, in resisting the Hegemon's birth control rules. Eventually, he agrees to go with them, if he can have his family moved to the USA and promoted back to normal, compliant status. He tricks them by not going to Battle School, but they believe he will have children just in time to save the world from the Formics. This story contains younger versions of important characters in the Enderverse, such as Hyrum Graff and Admiral Chamrajnagar.
