The Pelham Islands

The Pelham Islands is a colloquial historical name for a group of islands in western Long Island Sound. The group is seldom called The Pelham Islands nowadays because most people who live in the area are not originally from there. The name stems from the group all once belonged to Thomas Pell, to whom the Town of Pelham, New York and Pelham Manor, New York, Pellville, New York, North Pelham, Pelham Gardens, Bartow-Pell Mansion and Pelham Bay N.Y. owe their names. Thomas Pell bought the area and islands from the Siwanoy Native American Indians. These islands also once were part of the Town Of Pelham N.Y.. There have been some politicians in Westchester County who want them returned 130 years after they seceeded from it. The main islands to this group are Hunters Island, Twin Island, Goose Island, Davids Island, City Island, Hart Island, High Island, Rat Island, Chimney Sweeps Islands and The Blauzes. Hunters Island and Twin Island are part of Pelham Bay Park. Hunters Island and Twin Island are now connected to Rodman's Neck by landfill made in the 1930s. The landfill was rubbish used to make Orchard Beach and its parking lot. One third of Pelham Bay, a shallow bay was filled in to make the beach and parking lot. Davids Island is undergoing development. City Island is inhabited and nearby High Island has a radio transmitter. Hart Island is a potter's field cemetary and prison. Goose Island, Rat Island, Chimney Sweeps Islands, and The Blauzes are tiny rocky uninhabited islands made of bedrock. In the early 1800's Rat Island used to have a typhoid quarantine hospital where infected patients were quarantined. There are cobblestone remains of the building and a small boat channel was carved into bedrock on the south side.
