The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a series of novels by the author Alexander McCall Smith. It is also the name of the first novel in the series, and of the Gaborone-based detective agency whose founder the series follows. The episodic novels are as much about the adventures and foibles of village characters as they are about solving mysteries. For the most part, the books tell the story of Precious Ramotswe, the first woman detective in Botswana, but they also tell those of Grace Makutsi, her secretary, and "the excellent" Mr J. L. B. Matekoni, the finest mechanic in Botswana. The series is generally light-hearted, though it touches on serious issues such as domestic violence and clinical depression. The series of novels include:
  • The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (1999)
  • Tears Of The Giraffe (2000)
  • Morality for Beautiful Girls (2001)
  • The Kalahari Typing School for Men (2002)
  • The Full Cupboard of Life (2004)
  • The Company of Cheerful Ladies (2004 - also known as The Night-Time Dancer)
