The Man In Black

The Man in Black could refer to any one of the following fictional or real persons: 1. The Man in Black is a character in Oliver Goldsmith's 1760 - 1762 Citizen of the World. The Man in Black is a charitable but disappointed figure who has great generosity and yet prefers to be thought very disdainful of mankind. He is an occasional friend of the narrator, Lien Chi Altangi, the fictional Mandarin ambassador from China in Great Britain. 2. The Man in Black is also a character in George Borrow's 1857 novel Romany Rye. There, he is a Jesuit priest. 3. In William Goldman's novel and movie The Princess Bride, The Man in Black is also a character. There he is the protagonist, Westley, also known as The Dread Pirate Roberts. 4. In Stephen King's novel The Gunslinger, the man in black is the person whom the main character, Roland, pursues for most of the story. When the two characters meet the man tells Roland his name is Walter o'Dim. Walter is also known as Randall Flagg. 5. The Man in Black is a nickname given to Johnny Cash, the American country and western singer, who almost always dressed in black. It is also a name of a song he wrote.
