The Man in Black is also a character in George Borrow's 1857 novel Romany Rye. There, he is a Jesuit priest. 3. In William Goldman's novel and movie The Princess Bride, The Man in Black is also a character. There he is the protagonist, Westley, also known as The Dread Pirate Roberts. 4. In Stephen King's novel The Gunslinger, the man in black is the person whom the main character, Roland, pursues for most of the story. When the two characters meet the man tells Roland his name is Walter o'Dim. Walter is also known as Randall Flagg. 5. The Man in Black is a nickname given to Johnny Cash, the American country and western singer, who almost always dressed in black. It is also a name of a song he wrote.
