The Madcap Laughs was Syd Barrett's first solo album after leaving Pink Floyd. After David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd as a replacement for Barrett (In February 1968, it was rumoured he would continue in the band in a "Brian Wilson" role, writing the material behind the spotlights). Altough months later that option wasn't clearly going to be used, Barrett, with his manager Peter Jenner, began working on his first solo tracks on May 13. After lining out the first tracks (of which some were used not before Barrett and Opel) - Swan Lee, Late Night, Lanky, Golden Hair, Rhamaddan and Clowns and Jugglers, Barrett stopped working until April 1969.

After returning, him and Jenner agreed to look at his new compositions more closely instead of revamping old material, and the first new composition, Opel, took nine takes but was left outside Barrett's two original albums. Before meeting the session musicians for the album, Barrett completed Love You (four takes were recorded; the first being the slower, the third the faster and the fourth what would turn to be the main track) and It's no good trying, and using his Zippo-lighter slide technique, Barrett overdubbed Late Night. Terrapin and Golden Hair were also being worked at the time.

Now, with bassist Willie Wilson and drummer Jerry Shirley, Barrett worked on No Man's Land, Here I Go, No Good Trying and Terrapin, before David Gilmour (who was taking growing interest by the later sessions) suggested that he and Roger Waters should produce some tracks of the album. During June and July 26th the Pink Floyd duo worked with Barrett on a three day sprint (as Ummagumma was being mixed at the same time) and days later Barrett would finish recording for The Madcap Laughs.

Octopus was released as a single (released in December 1969), and shortly after the album was released in January 1970, Barrett accepted to make an appearance at John Peel's Top Gear show (the five live tracks appeared as a semi-official bootleg), where all tracks but Terrapin were from upcoming album, Barrett
