The Long Goodbye

The Long Goodbye (ISBN 0394757688) is a 1954 novel by Raymond Chandler, centered on his famous detective Philip Marlowe. Feelings on it are mixed. While some consider it not on the level of The Big Sleep or Farewell, My Lovely, others rank it as the best of his work. It is notable for using hard-boiled detective fiction as a vehicle for social criticism. It is also known for having autobiographical elements that relate to Chandler's life. The 1973 film adaptation of The Long Goodbye was directed by Robert Altman and starred Elliott Gould as Marlowe and film noir veteran Sterling Hayden as Wade.

Quote from 1973 movie
  • "I tell you what we're gonna do, Marlboro. You're gonna take that goddamn J.C. Penney tie off and we're gonna have an old fashioned man to man drinking party." "Well, that's okay but I'm not taking off the tie." (Roger Wade and Marlowe)
