The Kln Concert

The Kln Concert is a recording released through ECM by the renowned jazz pianist Keith Jarrett, who sustained solo improvisations at the Kln Opera House in 1975, the first part lasting 26 minutes and the second 40 minutes. This is considered by many a classic jazz record. Ever since the release of The Kln Concert, Jarrett has been asked by pianists, students, musicologists and others, to publish the music played in this concert so others should be able to play it. He at first resisted such requests since, as he himself declared, the music played was improvised "on a certain night and should go as quickly as it comes", and since transcribing a section as it is on record is an extremely difficult task. However, this improvisation already existed in recording, and the transcription only represents the music, so he finally came around to publish an authorized edition, but recommended that every pianist who intended to play the concert should use the recording itself as the final-word reference. Also, a transcription for classical guitar has been published by Manuel Barrueco.
