The Impressions is an Australian musical act, which originated in Melbourne, Australia in early 2002. The original line-up including Thomas Graham (guitar), Daniel Broderick (bass) and Paul van Raay (drums). However, after continued disputes, van Raay left the band and was replaced by Christopher Hysted. The Impressions were known for fusing contemporary western rock with traditional eastern music. Their first hit, "Tide", demonstrated the emphasis the band placed on untuned percussion. The Impressions, even today, are remembered as a band who believed that drums were more than a background instrument. Both Graham and Broderick had spent much of their youth performing in jazz and blues bands, resulting in a distinct blues influence in later compositions. Proud advocators of civil rights, the later generation of The Impressions (including Hysted) dedicated much of their time to fundraising concerts, with profits going, largely, to Amnesty International.
