The Hot Gates

The Hot Gates is a translation of the ancient Greek Thermopylae, which was where Leonidas I made his last stand against the Persian army under Xerxes I. The Hot Gates is also the title of a collection by Lord of the Flies author, William Golding. The collection contains "Billy the Kid" and "The Ladder and the Tree", and his essay "Fable" answering questions about Lord of the Flies. The book starts out with an essay on Thermopylae, thus giving it the title.
