The Hidden Staircase

The Hidden Staircase is the second book in the Nancy Drew mystery series by Carolyn Keene. In the original 1930s edition, Nancy's neighbors are troubled by unexplained phenomenon in their large mansion. One Amazon reviewer complained that the mystery's solution was rendered somewhat predictable by the book's title. In this edition the villian's black maid speaks in a dialect, and holds the police off with a shotgun.
