The Colonel's BequestThe Colonel's Bequest - A Laura Bow Mystery is a computer game published by Sierra On-Line in 1989. It is the first game of the short-lived Laura Bow Mysteries series created by Roberta Williams. The game tells the story of Laura Bow, a Tulane University student who spends a weekend at her friend's uncle's decaying sugar plantation and finds herself at the center of a murder mystery. When the reclusive Colonel Dijon gathers his bickering relatives for the reading of his will, tensions explode and the bickering leads to murder. Can Laura expose the killer before it's too late? Like the second game in the series, The Dagger of Amon Ra, it is set in the 1920s, which gives the game a unique, Art Deco-esque style. Most of the game characters are named after prominent 1920s figures, such as Rudolph Valentino, W. C. Fields, and Gloria Swanson. In typical Sierra adventure game fashion, death seemingly lurks around every corner. However, despite the fact that the main character is trapped in an isolated island with a ruthless killer, Laura is not in immediate danger by him. Most player deaths occur by accident or misadventure like falling off a balcony, being crushed by a falling chandelier, tripping down a dark staircase, or being attacked by alligators.
