The Backyard

The Backyard is a rock band based in Mumbai, India. The Backyard started in early 1992 when Harold Fernandes (lead guitar) and Prateek Gupta (drums) teamed to perform in college music festivals across India. They recruited bass player Krishna Kamat and keyboardist Gaurav Marballi in 1993. From 1993 till 1995, the Backyard performed in several venues in India, including two shows at Rang Bhavan, Mumbai's premier rock music arena, and a performance on All India Radio. They eventually bagged a gig at Not Just Jazz By The Bay, a popular Mumbai jazz club, and played there for over 4 years. Although the band members have diverse musical influences, all of them are jazz fanatics. They cherish the live stage, playing both original compositions and covers. Long instrumental solos are common; the members are known to take songs like the Door's "LA Woman", and turn them into 15-minute jam sessions, much like a jazz band would do when playing jazz standards. The band members have taken a sabbatical since 2001. However, they meet each other often, and are presently recording material for a new album.
