The Adventures Of LoloAdventures of Lolo is a puzzle game released in 1989 by HAL Corporation for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It is based off of the Japanese Eggerland video game series. Adventures of Lolo takes place in the country of Eden, where the Great Devil is wreaking havoc. Princess Lala leaves to seek help from Prince Lolo, and on the way back to Eden the Great Devil appears to kidnap Lala in front of Lolo. In order to save Lala and the country of Eden, Lolo arrives at the Great Devil's Castle and makes his way through the ten floors to save Lala. The Eggerland series is a confusing one. Before Adventures of Lolo was released, there had already been five games in the Eggerland series: Adventures of Lolo was released in the United States in 1989, but never came out in Japan. The levels were based off of the ones in the previous Japanese games in addition to some original levels, for a total of 50 levels. Because there was no Japanese equivilent of this game, the US releases Adventures of Lolo 2 and Adventures of Lolo 3 were known as Adventures of Lolo and Adventures of Lolo 2 in Japan, respectively. The Japanese versions share the same graphics as their American counterparts but feature (for the most part) different, harder levels. Gameplay overview In each level, Lolo must collect all of the Heart Framers while avoiding enemies. Doing so opens up a Jewel Box, which contains the key to the next level. Lolo's only weapon is a Magic Shot, which is obtained by collecting certain Heart Framers and allows Lolo to temporarily turn enemies into Eggs, which can be pushed around. If Lolo shoots an egg a second time, it will fly off the screen, though the monster will reappear in its original starting point a few seconds later. There are various types of terrain and obstacles in the levels. Emerald Framers, or EFs, are green blocks that Lolo may push around freely, but he cannot pull them. Lolo cannot push multiple EFs at one time. EFs are typically used to block dangerous monsters or ranged attacks from other monsters. One type of terrain is the grass (sometimes called flower bed), which Lolo may walk freely on, yet any mobile monster cannot enter the grass on its own. If Lolo pushes an egg onto the grass, the monster will try to walk off after the egg hatches. Another type is the desert. Lolo will only move at half speed, but any mobile monster is unaffected by the deserts. Some other obstacles include trees and rocks. Monsters that have a ranged attack, like Medusas or Gols, can shoot through the trees, but Lolo cannot. Rocks prevent shots from both Lolo and monsters. Another obstacle is the one-way arrows. Lolo can enter these arrows from any direction except the direction the arrow is pointing. For instance, if the arrow is pointing up, Lolo cannot walk down against the arrow. Lastly, some levels contain water or lava. Neither prevent shots from going through. With water, however, Lolo can push a monster in an egg onto the water to cross it. Some waterways even have currents which Lolo can ride on to other parts of the level. Eggs may not be pushed into the lava. Another tricky obstacle that was only featured in The Adventures of Lolo 3 is the crumbling bridge. These bridges can only be crossed twice. The first time will make the bridge crack. The second time, the bridge will crumble away, leaving either water or lava behind. Powers In some levels, Lolo can obtain certain powers to help him. These powers include the Hammer, the Bridge, and the Arrow Turn. To obtain a power, Lolo must collect a certain amount of hearts. The level defines how many are needed, but this value varies from level to level. The maximum amount of powers a level can have is three. - A hammer allows Lolo to break one rock.
- A bridge may be used on an area of water or lava, though if used on lava it will burn down a few seconds after use.
- The arrow turn allows Lolo to rotate a one-way arrow clockwise.
Monsters The game series also features nine monsters that Lolo must deal with. See the pages for more details on the monsters. - Snakey - A green snake that is immobile and causes no threat to Lolo.
- Leeper - A green frog-like monster that moves freely. When a Leeper touches Lolo, it falls asleep permanently.
- Rocky - A grey stone monster that moves around the level slowly and attempts to trap or block Lolo when he's nearby.
- Skull - Skulls remain motionless until all hearts are taken. Then they will begin to chase Lolo around. A skull's touch is fatal.
- Gol - A pink dinosaur-like monster that sleeps. After all hearts are taken, Gol will wake up and can shoot a fireball at Lolo.
- Alma - An armadillo that moves freely around levels and chases Lolo. An Alma's touch is fatal.
- Medusa - A deadly monster that can always kill Lolo if Lolo walks into its line of sight.
- Don Medusa - A pink devil head that moves back in forth. Similar to the Medusa, Dons attack with a line of sight shot that cannot be avoided.
- Moby - A blue whale that tries to pull Lolo in with its suction attack.
Trivia - This is the only Lolo game that has some sort of text in the game to tell a story with the game.
- This game is the first one where the rooms are not connected and Lolo starts in a pre-defined location.
- There is a hacked version of this game called Challenging Lolo.
