TerespolisTerespolis is a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, near Petrpolis. It became a municipality in 1891. It has the best infrastructure for visiting the Serra dos rgos National Park. It hosts Brazil's soccer team training center, the Granja Comary. - Population: 138,081 (2000) inhabitants

History Until the XVIII century the region was inhabited by native Indians and runaway slaves. They founded a quilombo called Quilombo da Serra. But Terespolis history really starts in 1818, as a farm owned by the Englishman Georg March (17811845). When he died the farm was splitted in several parts, some of which were eventually sold by their new owners. In 1855, the region was promoted to the village status and was officially named as "Freguesia de Santo Antonio de Paquequer", but the local inhabitants, already called it Terespolis (named after the Empress Tereza Cristina). There were 2,000 people living in Terespolis in 1855. In 1868, Count DEu and Princess Isabel visited the place. In 1870, the Emperor Dom Pedro II visited it, praising the village's beauty. On July 6th 1891 the village status was upgraded to the municipality one. Terespolis Peaks Terespolis is famous in Brazil for its peaks which attract many alpinists from all over the country: - Peak of Pedra do Sino (2263 meters)
