Tenkiller is a census-designated place located in Cherokee County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 549.

Geography

Tenkiller is located at 35°47'31" North, 94°52'28" West (35.792006, -94.874398). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 51.8 km² (20.0 mi²). 49.2 km² (19.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.10% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 549 people, 198 households, and 155 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 11.2/km² (28.9/mi²). There are 230 housing units at an average density of 4.7/km² (12.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 49.18% White, 1.82% African American, 38.43% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 10.20% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 198 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.1% are married couples living together, 13.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% are non-families. 18.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.09. In the CDP the population is spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 108.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.3 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $24,712, and the median income for a family is $26,618. Males have a median income of $21,250 versus $26,750 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $12,366. 21.0% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 36.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
