Tater Tots

Tater Tots, also known as 'tots, are a snack or side-dish made from deep-fried, grated potatoes. Usually commercially produced and available frozen, the grated potatoes are formed into squat cylindrical shapes and fried until a deep, golden-brown. Tater Tots are commonly found in the U.S. in cafeterias and school lunch-counters, as well as the supermarket frozen food aisle. 'Tots may have received their name because of their diminutive size or because they are often served to children. Tater Tots were invented in 1953 by Golden and Nephi Grigg of the Ore-Ida company as a means of utilizing the potato shreds left over from french fry production. They first became available in stores in 1954, and today, Americans consume approximately 70 million pounds of 'tots. Recently, 'tots were featured prominently in the film Napoleon Dynamite.
