Tariff Of 1816

The Tariff of 1816 was the first protectionist tariff in the United States. Following the end of the War of 1812 and the associated Embargo Act, British goods were once again available to American markets. The tariff raised import duties 25% to lessen the flood of imports, protect domestic industry, and prevent an economic crisis. It was part of Henry Clay's "American System."
