Tariff of 1816
was the first
protectionist
tariff in the
United States
. Following the end of the
War of 1812
and the associated
Embargo Act
,
British
goods were once again available to American markets. The tariff raised import duties 25% to lessen the flood of imports, protect domestic industry, and prevent an economic crisis. It was part of
Henry Clay
's "
American System
."
