Taos Hum

The Taos Hum is a mysterious low-pitched noise that some residents of Taos, New Mexico claim to hear. The phenomenon has been reported from all over the world, especially in Europe. Since it is indetectable by microphones, its source and nature is still a mystery. It is believed by some that this ultra low frequency originates from a covert hidden government research laboratory, whose existence has neither been proven or disproved. Other scientists ascribe this phenomenon to naturally-occurring geological events. The lore of this phenomenon has become part of the appeal of this unique community. Some specific explanations which have been put forth include:
  • Secret research laboratory experiments
  • Communications with submarines using extremely low frequency radio transmissions. Proponents of this theory suggest the transmissions may somehow detected by the human body.
  • High frequency attenuation of distant industrial and automobile sounds. As sound moves through the atmosphere, the high frequencies decrease more rapidly than the low frequency ones, which subsequently travel greater distances. The low-frequency sounds can be amplified by walls and structural geometry, and sound like ambiguous rumblings or hums.
  • Infrasound from unknown sources.
  • Generated by the body, the auditory or the nervous system. Like Tinnitus, but at lower frequencies.
