Tantalus Field

In the fictional Star Trek universe, a Tantalus Field is a device from the Mirror Universe reality. The Mirror Universe version of Captain James T. Kirk had a Tantalus generator device installed in his quarters. He obtained the device from the plunder of an alien world. The device allowed him to monitor anyone on board his ship, the I.S.S. Enterprise, and at his whim, he could "eliminate" anyone he deemed a threat to his command. The device produced a phaser-like effect that disrupted matter, vaporizing the target remotely, so that no one really knew he was behind the assassination. The Tantalus Field was first seen in use in the episode Mirror, Mirror.
