Tamil National AllianceFormed in November of 2001 in preparation for the December election, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is an extreme nationalistic grouping of parties consisting of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC), the Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization (TELO) and the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF). Acting as the political wing of the Liberation Tigers for Tamil Eelam (LTTE), it is widely accepted that the militant organization and the political alliance are relatively synonymous. Acting as the political wing of the Tamil nationalist movement, the TNAs political goals consist of ensuring equal rights for the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka and for the creation of an autonomous Tamil homeland in north eastern Sri Lanka. In the April 2004 election in which the SLFP and JVP alliance led by President Kumaratunga came to power the TNA led by R. Sampanthan received 6.84% of the vote. This spells out to TNA 22 seats in the 250 person parliament. The parliament is led by a closely divided minority government that has had to work with the TNA in order to pass measures to improve the situation with the LTTE. Since late October 2004, the government and the LTTE have made attempts to restart Norwegian brokered peace talks which had come to an end because of the outcome of the April 2004 election. The TNA has remained the LTTEs political ally in attempting to restart the peace negotiations.
